A competency assessment measures people and roles against a defined set of competencies, the observable skills and behaviors a role needs to perform, and scores the distance between the level required and the level demonstrated. Assessmentcloud runs it as a structured assessment rather than a form-filling exercise: you start from ready-made competency profiles per role, set the required proficiency on a 0 to 4 scale where every level has a plain behavioral meaning, then collect self-assessments and manager verification so the ratings hold up under scrutiny. The result is a competency matrix you can read across the whole company: rows for roles, columns for competencies, gaps hatched and scored by size and business impact. That is what turns a competency framework from a document HR maintains into something that changes hiring and development decisions. Results feed the SG-04 SKILLS dimension of your whole-company score, benchmarked against the industry median, so a thin bench in a critical competency shows up next to the culture, process, digital, and compliance picture instead of sitting in a folder. Pricing is flat from $49 a month for the whole company. One boundary worth stating plainly: this is designed to target development and workforce planning, not to grade individuals for pay or performance decisions. The moment people believe scores feed their compensation, they inflate, and the data stops being worth collecting.
Go deeper: this dimension works alongside skills gap analysis and training needs assessment, and the guides on skills matrix template and how to do a skills gap analysis show the frameworks behind the scoring.

A 0 to 4 scale with behavioral anchors at every level. Nobody can defend the difference between a 6 and a 7 on a 10-point scale, so scores drift; five anchored levels do not.
People rate themselves and managers verify. Two views cancel out the optimists and the modest, which is what makes the matrix usable.
Every gap is weighted, so a small gap in a critical competency outranks a large one in something that will not matter this year.
Choose the competency framework
Pick role profiles and confirm the competencies that genuinely drive performance in each. Ten to fifteen per role is plenty.
Set the required level
Decide what level each role requires on the 0 to 4 scale. Not everything needs a 4, and pretending it does is how the results get ignored.
Assess and verify
People self-assess, managers verify, and disagreements surface as flags rather than getting averaged away.
Read the matrix and act
Gaps are scored and ranked, then sorted into develop, hire, mentor, or redesign, with reasoning attached.
A competency assessment measures a person or a role against a defined set of competencies, the observable skills and behaviors the role requires, and scores the distance between the level required and the level demonstrated. The output is a matrix showing which roles are covered, which are thin, and where the gaps are worth closing.
A skills gap analysis usually measures technical skills against role requirements. A competency assessment covers a broader set: technical skills plus the behaviors and judgment a role needs, such as how someone handles an escalation or a stakeholder disagreement. In practice most companies run one exercise and call it either name; the scoring mechanics are the same.
Rate each competency on a 0 to 4 scale where every level has a behavioral meaning: 0 none, 1 basic with supervision, 2 works routine tasks independently, 3 handles the full range including exceptions, 4 handles the hardest cases and teaches others. The gap is required level minus current level, then multiplied by a business-impact weight to get the priority.
We recommend keeping them separate, and the platform is designed for that. If people believe the ratings affect pay or promotion, they inflate their self-assessments and the whole dataset becomes decorative. Say plainly that the assessment drives training budget and workforce planning, and the honesty of the answers tends to hold.
