Top Workplaces award cost, eligibility and how the Energage Workplace Survey decides who wins

Nearly every roundup of employer awards treats Top Workplaces and Great Place To Work as the same kind of purchase. They are not. One of them publishes, on its own site, that nominating, participating and winning cost nothing. The other prices on request. This page sets out what Energage actually requires of an entrant, what the real cost of entering is once you stop looking at the invoice, and how to tell in advance whether you would clear the bar.

Top Workplaces is the employer recognition program run by Energage, and entering it is free. Energage states on its own site that there is no cost to nominate, participate, or win awards, and describes Top Workplaces as the only no-cost employer recognition program. Those statements were read off topworkplaces.com in September 2026. The gates are eligibility and participation rather than money. Energage publishes a minimum of 35 employees to qualify for Top Workplaces awards, notes that some awards require higher counts, and sets a 35 percent response rate as the minimum to be considered. The instrument is the Energage Workplace Survey, 26 statements covering the parts of the employee experience most associated with engagement, which employees can complete in under 10 minutes. One survey qualifies a company for every award it is eligible for within a 12 month window, and Energage lists over 80 national, regional, industry and culture award opportunities built on that single fielding, backed by more than 60 journalistic institutions that publish the regional lists. Participation is confidential and only the names of winning companies are published, so a company that enters and does not win is not named. What is not free is the paid Energage platform that sits alongside the award, covering pulse surveys, workplace insights, 360 surveys, behavioral assessments, performance management, succession planning, compensation and employer branding. Energage publishes no price for any of it and routes buyers to a demo request; its pricing URL returned a 404 when we checked in September 2026. Assessmentcloud is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a substitute for Energage or Top Workplaces, we do not administer the Energage Workplace Survey, and nothing here confers or predicts award eligibility. What this platform does is separate: it scores five organizational dimensions, culture and engagement (CU-01), process maturity (PR-02), digital maturity (DM-03), skills gaps (SG-04) and compliance readiness (CR-05), into one 0 to 100 report against an industry median, which is a useful thing to run before you commit your one survey of the year to an award cycle.

Go deeper: this dimension works alongside employee engagement surveys and company culture survey, and the guides on top workplaces vs great place to work and best employee listening platforms show the frameworks behind the scoring.

LANDSCAPE

Top Workplaces and Great Place To Work compared on what each one publishes

Every figure below was read off the awarding organization own website in September 2026, not off a roundup or a review aggregator. Both programs change their requirements and packaging between cycles, so treat this as the baseline you verify against rather than as a quote. We are the third column and we lose most of these rows deliberately: we are not an award program and cannot make you one.

What you are comparing Top Workplaces (Energage) Great Place To Work Certification Assessmentcloud
Published cost to enter None. Energage states there is no cost to nominate, participate, or win awards, and describes it as the only no-cost employer recognition program No figure published. The certification page states the cost varies by company size and services chosen and directs you to contact the team for a tailored quote A flat organization-wide subscription rather than a per-employee award fee. This is not an award and no badge results from it
Minimum employees 35 to qualify for Top Workplaces awards, with some awards requiring higher counts 10 or more employees to be considered for Certification No minimum, though comparison against an industry median is more meaningful above roughly 25 respondents
The survey instrument Energage Workplace Survey, 26 statements, completed in under 10 minutes Trust Index survey, 60 statements plus two open-ended questions, measuring credibility, respect, fairness, pride and camaraderie A five-dimension assessment covering culture and engagement, process maturity, digital maturity, skills gaps and compliance readiness
Participation threshold 35 percent response rate is the published minimum to be considered No response rate figure published, but surveys must meet stated requirements for distribution and the percentage of employees who respond, and Certification requires roughly 7 in 10 employees reporting a consistently positive experience No threshold, but the report flags low participation rather than scoring through it
What you get if you qualify Eligibility for over 80 national, regional, industry and culture awards from one survey within 12 months, published through more than 60 journalistic institutions Certification valid for 12 months, plus eligibility to be considered for the Best Workplaces lists A 0 to 100 score per dimension against an industry median, with the weakest areas ranked. No public recognition of any kind
If you do not qualify Nothing is published. Energage states participation is confidential and only winners are named You keep the survey data and areas of opportunity and can try again. The fee is not contingent on the result Not applicable. There is no pass mark

The honest reading of this table is that the first two columns are not competing with the third. If what you want is a recognizable employer brand asset for recruiting, an award program is the correct purchase and no internal diagnostic substitutes for one. Where a diagnostic helps is before that decision: knowing whether your engagement picture and your participation rate would survive contact with a 35 percent floor, and knowing which of the other four dimensions is quietly causing the engagement number. For the cost side of the other program, Great Place To Work certification cost sets out its published eligibility and scoring rules. For the vendor side of that question, Energage alternatives covers what the paid platform does beyond the award, employee engagement surveys covers running your own read, and Top Workplaces vs Great Place To Work works through which of the two award programs is worth entering.

CU-01

What you get

The entry fee is genuinely zero, and that is the fact most comparisons get wrong

Energage states plainly that there is no cost to nominate, participate, or win awards, and calls Top Workplaces the only no-cost employer recognition program. Plenty of third-party articles imply otherwise, usually because they are describing Great Place To Work certification, which is a different company with a different commercial model and does not publish a price at all. If someone in your organization has been told that entering Top Workplaces requires a budget line, that is worth correcting before the conversation goes any further, because it changes who has to approve it.

The 35 percent response rate is the real barrier, not the price

Energage publishes a 35 percent response rate as the minimum to be considered for a Top Workplaces award. In an organization with healthy internal communications that is unremarkable. In one where the last all-staff survey limped to 22 percent, it is the whole project. Response rate is a function of trust, manager follow-through on the last survey, and whether frontline staff have a device and ten minutes, none of which improve because an award is at stake. Solve participation first and the award becomes a byproduct rather than a gamble.

You get one survey per 12 months, so the timing is a real decision

Energage states that one survey qualifies your company for all eligible awards within 12 months. That is generous, and it also means the fielding you choose is the fielding you are stuck with for a year. Running it three weeks after a restructure, during a system migration, or in the middle of a peak season will produce a legitimate result that is not representative of a normal year. Pick the window deliberately and against your own operating calendar, not against the publication deadline of the regional list you want to appear on.

Entering is confidential, so the downside of trying is smaller than people assume

Energage states that participation is private and only the names of winning companies are published. That materially changes the risk calculation. A company that enters, misses, and tells nobody has spent staff time and nothing else. The cost that does exist is internal: the expectation you set with employees by asking, and the credibility you spend if nothing visible happens afterwards. That cost is real and it is the one worth planning for, because an unanswered survey does more damage than no survey.

HOW IT WORKS

From setup to scored report

01

Check the two eligibility numbers before anything else

Energage publishes a 35 employee minimum to qualify for Top Workplaces awards and notes that some awards require higher counts. If you are under 35, the question is closed for now. If you are near the line, confirm how Energage counts part-time staff and contractors for your entity before you plan around it, because that detail decides borderline cases and is not something to assume from a blog post.

02

Look up your last internal survey response rate and compare it to 35 percent

This is the single most predictive number you have. If your most recent all-staff survey cleared 50 percent, participation is not your problem. If it came in below 35, you are being told in advance that an award entry would fail on a technicality rather than on culture. Fix the participation problem first: publish what changed after the last survey, give frontline teams paid time and a device, and have managers ask rather than HR emailing.

03

Decide whether you want a diagnosis or a badge, because they are different purchases

An award survey is designed to rank you against other employers on employee experience. A diagnostic is designed to tell you which part of your organization is weakest and what to do about it. Both are legitimate, and confusing them is how companies end up with a logo for the careers page and no idea what to fix. If recruitment marketing is genuinely the goal, the award is the right instrument. If the goal is knowing where you stand, it is not.

04

Run your own read first if you are not confident of the answer

Because the award survey is a once-a-year, one-shot instrument, going in blind is an avoidable risk. A separate internal read across culture and engagement, process maturity, digital maturity, skills and compliance readiness tells you both whether the engagement picture is strong enough to be worth entering and which of the other four dimensions is dragging on it. That is a different question from the one the award answers, and it is the one you can act on in the meantime.

DIAGNOSTIC INPUT, NOT A CERTIFIED AUDIT.

Assessmentcloud scores tell you how ready you are and what to fix. They do not certify you against SOC 2, ISO 27001, or any legal framework, and we never claim they do. Only an accredited auditor can certify you. Run the diagnostic first, walk into the audit without surprises, and spend auditor hours on certification instead of discovery.

FAQ

Questions about top workplaces award

Nothing to enter. Energage states on topworkplaces.com that there is no cost to nominate, participate, or win awards, and describes Top Workplaces as the only no-cost employer recognition program. The paid Energage platform sold alongside the award is a separate purchase, and Energage publishes no price for it.

At least 35. Energage publishes a 35 employee minimum to qualify for Top Workplaces awards and notes that some individual awards require higher counts than that. Confirm how your part-time staff and contractors are counted before planning around the threshold if you are close to the line.

Energage publishes 35 percent as the minimum response rate to be considered for Top Workplaces awards. For most organizations this, rather than cost or culture, is the gate that decides the outcome, so compare it against your most recent internal survey response rate before you commit to a cycle.

26 statements, which Energage states employees can complete in less than 10 minutes. The statements cover the areas of the employee experience most related to engagement, and Energage says the benchmarks behind them were developed from over 20 years of research into what makes a great workplace.

Energage states that one survey qualifies your company for all eligible awards within 12 months, and lists over 80 national, regional, industry and culture award opportunities. Regional lists are published through more than 60 journalistic institutions, which is why the same survey can appear in several places.

No. Energage states that participation is private and only the names of winning companies are published. That keeps the downside of entering to internal cost and internal expectation rather than reputation, which is the main practical argument for entering when you are unsure of the result.

No. They are separate organizations with different instruments and different commercial models. Top Workplaces is run by Energage and is free to enter. Great Place To Work runs a paid Certification built on its 60 statement Trust Index survey and publishes no price, stating that cost varies by company size and services chosen.

No. Energage sells pulse surveys, workplace insights, 360 surveys, behavioral assessments, performance management, succession planning, compensation and employer branding tools alongside the free award, and every pricing route ends at a demo request. Its pricing URL returned a 404 when we checked in September 2026.

It is worth doing if you are unsure of the result, because the award fielding is a once-a-year instrument and you cannot rerun it. An internal read tells you whether participation would clear 35 percent and which parts of the organization are dragging on engagement, both of which are actionable now rather than after the award cycle closes.
